Petticoat lane,Brick lane,Club Row

Any memories of these once great institutions of East End life?

Me and my sistet used to beg our mum to buy us a puppy from club row dog market. In later yeàrs would always pop in Percy Ingles for a salt beef baegal and on the way back get me grandads winkles from tubby issacs stall.

I took my other half to the lane last christmas as her family are from stepney (she's an aussue) and she always wanted to see it.
Fuck me,grim dont come close.

Thanks Billy you're right.Club Row was the place I was on about.As others have said seems hard to believe but in the early 70's there wearnt many animals of any species that wearnt for sale,I even thought that as a young kid but it was a fascinating place.

Went to Brady Club in Hanbury St through the seventies. Bit scary for a kid wandering around Whitechapel on a week night but worth it for the football training. Worked down The Lane one summer. Blindingly hot so probably '76. And agree only an American or a cunt would say begal (baygel) not begal (biygal). Only reason to go there now is for barista training.

Loved Brick lane on a Sunday back in tbe day. Really stinky piss stained slum of a market but proper old school with loads of characters.

As it goes Petticote lane wearnt the street where animals were traded.
There was another street not far away but I can't remember the name of it ?

Remember going up that way with me dad and him trading kestrals fancy hoods.
Almost any animal was for sale probably 72 ish I first went.

My Uncle had 2 cafes in Spitalfields market...
Worked there in summer holidays...
Making tea...peeling potatoes...serving breakfasts...mopping the floor...etc...
Happy days...earning a few bob...

My Auntie used to be a clothes dealer who bought her stock from Petticoat Lane. I used to go up there with her in the 70's. She used to buy me these mad jean jackets with designs on the back.

I worked in many markets (Queens, Woolwixh, The Cut, East Street ) in 70s and early 80s but never these. My dad loved going on Sundays and would often bring home some great stuff ... and some absolute rubbish! My greatest memory though was one Sunday lunchtime in his coat pocket was - to my mum’s horror ! - a new puppy
